IN THE GAPS

A collaborative short film
by Artist Hannah Smith & Writer Liz John

My first commission and collaboration all in one, what a journey we had.

Liz and I came together to create a piece of work combining my artwork and her writing. Never in my wildest dreams did I think of turning my artwork into a short film, but after Liz nudged me, we got together and did just that!

During my Core Gallery Solo Show at the end of last year, I decided to paint while I was in the space surrounded by my work on the walls. It was easy to get started on my new painting as I was buzzing from the feeling of having my first solo show. I was so proud to present my nature inspired artwork that it inspired me to paint with a different energy. High on my achievement of filling such a large space with my work this new piece received some rather unexpected bold colours from me and I loved every minute.

Liz used the artwork as her inspiration for her script and we recorded actor Claire Jones performing it. We somehow swiftly put it all together using software we had never before touched and what transpired is our short film below, a beautiful journey through the complexities of life.

Liz John writes drama for stage, screen and audio, including BBC TV Doctors and R4 The Archers. Her topical microplay ‘Together’ about the NHS crisis was recently performed at The REP. To learn more about Liz John, please visit www.lizjohn.wordpress.com
